Both design problems depend on fire.  Two works of José Clemente Orozco explore the gift of fire:  “Prometheus” at Pomona College and “Man of Fire,”in the chapel of Hospcio de Cabañas in Guadlajara.  Orozco gives this advice about creating well:

“In every painting, as in any other work of art, there is always an IDEA, never a STORY,  The idea is the point of departure, the first cause of the plastic construction, and it is always present all the time as energy creating matter.”

José Clemente Orozco

The first design problem, the Fellowship’s competition, is a metalworking center at the Penland School of Crafts in the Black Mountains of North Carolina.  Students will submit their work for independent judging by March 19, 2009.

The second design problem is a maple sugarhouse for hand crafted sugaring at a private estate, Stonybrook Farm, in Bridgewater Connecticut.

The studio will include an evening or Saturday visit to a blacksmith’s forge in Waltham and a Friday day trip to a sugar house in Tamworth, New Hampshire.

This Studio takes its lead from this year’s Lyceum Fellowship competition, entitled “Making as a Way of Thinking.”  The competiton is open to students of 14 architecture schools, including the BAC.

There are two design problems, and both will explore, in the words of the competition, “The challenge to architects of the 21st century … to bring together the skills and techniques of the digital/machine age and the qualities expressed in handcrafted construction so that our buildings return to being humane and connected to their place.”
